San Francisco is a small city, 7x7 miles, with a population of around 850,000 (although on any given day it may hold up to 4 million people due to tourism.) 10,000+ of this population are homeless. 60% of the methamphetamine consumed in the US comes through SF. Meth is so cheap that it's replacing crack as the primary street drug. 95% of the homeless are addicts. Officially 50% of California's foster youth will be homeless, 250,000+ new kids on the street every year. Veterans from Vietnam War all the way up to the most recent conflicts sleep in the streets.
