Summerland RDC is focused on building resilient and profitable horticultural production systems. The relatively mild climate in southern BC allows the production of high-value tender fruit crops that cannot be grown in most regions of the country. The Centre is in an ecologically sensitive location and surrounded by urban development. The unique setting and limited water supply inspires researchers at the Centre to focus on sustainable crop production practices to help preserve and enhance the resilience of such sensitive environments. Agassiz RDC is the lead centre in Canada for integrated research on peri-urban agriculture. Research focuses on developing intensive yet sustainable horticultural and forage management systems that are integrated within a peri-urban environment. The centre focuses its research activities in the following four broad strategic areas: soil health management, innovative crop production systems, integrated pest management and biodiversity enhancement.
