Inventory is a valuable asset within your company. This may be raw materials within a manufacturing company, or finished goods in a manufacturing or wholesale/distribution facility, or it may be items used in a service business. Inventory is used in many different businesses today. Since Inventory is a valuable asset, we all need to take care of our inventory. We must give it our respect so in turn, it can work for us as it should. How do we give inventory respect? We build policies and procedures to take care of it. A policy and procedure on how to order it, a policy and procedure on how to receive it and store it, a policy and procedure of how to order it and ship it, and more. One of the worst scenarios is for customer service to take an order thinking we have the product and find out the computer needed to be corrected. How many times can you short an order before you lose a customer? For over 30 years, I have worked with inventory. I want to pass along my lessons learned.
