Noted physician, scientist, botanist and scholar Casper Wistar was one of the early owners of the Historic Roxboro House, the location of the Specter Center. Wister was known to often open his home on a weekly basis, for gatherings of students, citizens, scientists, and travelers for the purpose of discussing important subjects of interest. “These assemblies, celebrated in the annals of Philadelphia under the title of Wistar parties.” Wistar’s practice was very much in custom of bipartisan discussion which was encouraged during the celebrated career of Senator Arlen Specter. To honor the tradition started by Wistar and to continue Senator Specter’s legacy, the Specter Center’s Roxboro House Roundtables were founded to create interdisciplinary discussions on topics of interest to faculty, administration, staff and students across the University.
