About

We are the Applied Research Collaboration West, or ARC West for short. We do applied research in the West of England, covering which covers the areas of Gloucestershire, WiIltshire and North Somerset. Cities and towns in our patch include Bristol, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare, Gloucester and Swindon. But our work has impact beyond our region, and can be national or even international in scope. We are part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research, also known as NIHR. NIHR is one of England’s largest health and social care research funders. It sits under the UK Government’s Department of Health and Social Care. The NIHR funds 15 Applied Research Collaborations across England. Our researchers don’t wear white coats or use test tubes or microscopes. Applied research is about answering questions that help our health and care system work better and improve people’s care and support.
