Yesterday’s Town is a multi-media video journalism project that investigates the changes gripping the British coastal tourism industry. The project idea incorporates the opinions of local tourism experts as well as economic and social science reports published by British research institutions. But more importantly, it tells the stories of the people and businesses this economic change affects most. Although the project contains themes that are common among most British seaside resorts, it focuses on one town in particular – Great Yarmouth, known as “Yarmouth.” Yarmouth has seen a huge decline in foot traffic – or the number of people traveling to the area for a vacation. My goal was to document what this means for the people of Yarmouth who have invested their livelihoods in the tourism industry. This project was funded by the Renee Crown Honors Program at Syracuse University.
